| A Short Biography
I was born in St. Paul on July 22, 1981. My family lived in south Minneapolis for the early years of my life. My parents, seeking a quieter community, moved to the then small, southern suburb of Eagan. Being of a working class, union-heavy family, most of my early life was spent surrounded by carpenters, masons, painters, mechanics, and the like. The theatre was never considered a career choice, nor even a choice of entertainment as it was completely alien to my family. I was the first of my family to receive a four-year college degree. I graduated with my B.A. in Theatre Arts from Southwest State University. Most of my time at SSU was spent acting, directing, and putting my writing on the stage in any capacity whenever I had the chance. I then moved to Las Vegas where I attended UNLV for my Masters of Fine Arts in Playwriting. While there, I was fortunate to study under some of the best teachers in the world. I was also able to connect with Cockroach Theatre, an incredibly talented and exciting group of artists in Las Vegas. I remain a proud national member of Cockroach Theatre. I am also a member of The Dramatists Guild and The Playwrights Center. My plays have now been seen in some capacity or another in over a dozen states including New York, California, Minnesota, Ohio, and Washington D.C. My work tends to reflect my background; often times dealing with working class people and labor issues as well as spiritual themes. I am inspired by the works of Bernard Shaw, Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Miller, Clifford Odets, Martin McDonagh, Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett, Romulus Linney, Peter Shaffer, and the dozens of other playwrights I come in contact with every year. I currently live in Minnesota where I spend most of my time writing plays, working with the youth group at my church, and teaching theatre at Ridgewater College. Besides theatre, I am an avid baseball (Go Twins!) and hockey fan as well as an almost mediocre snowboarder and softball player. I also love history, theology, philosophy, and a nice glass of scotch. I am committed to becoming a recognized professional playwright and am excited by any opportunity to see my work come to life. -Jayme McGhan- |
